Custom Knife Maker – Claude Montjoy

Well made custom knives are a delight to hold, admire and work with.  My brother recently bought a bird and trout knife by Claude Montjoy, a deceased knifemaker from Laurens County, South Carolina.  The knife fits my hand perfectly, and is well proportioned for using.  If you are a fan of Claude Montjoy, I’d love to hear from you and learn more about this custom knife maker.   I was very fortunate to acquire 28 Montjoy knives from an estate.   The craftsmanship in these knives is simply astounding.

Claude was a close friend of my in his later years of life.I continue to think of him very often, as a friend but mostly a most talented craft person. His knowledge of knife making and craftmanship was so above all others it truly amazed me.

As far as I know he wasn’t from NC but lived in Laurens County, South Carolina most of his life.

Claude was from Whitmire, SC. He was taught woodworking by my father, JL Welling JR. He was a very pleasant person, soft spoken and likeable. He showed me an airplane he was building once, it was in his home, in the living room with no exit large enough for a plane. I lost contact with Claude when I went into the Marine Corps and never regained it. I was very sad to hear of his death but remain a fan and friend.
