I began riding BMWs when I bought a used R69S in 1973. It was the finest motorcycle I’d ever owned. Since then I’ve owned two R65s, an R100RT, and the 1988 R100GS “Bumble Bee” dual sport touring bike pictured above. I bought it locally, with 8,100 miles – not yet broken in. It had BMW bags, heated grips, voltmeter, tachometer, stainless steel brake line, oil pan skid plate, and the factory “Sport Suspension” {WP rear shock, Progressive fork springs}. The bike was in immaculate condition, and was sold to an MSF instructor in the Philadelphia area.

I rode it to the RA ’98 National Rally – Berkshire Mountain Weekend (a low key, first class event). The bike is a delight to ride, whether on the four-lane Palisades Parkway, a two lane twisty Green Mountain road, or on a gravel road in the Berkshires. An awesome machine. I ran Red Line Synthetic Oil in the tranny, and it was a smooth shifter.

My brother Gary rides an ’88 R100 GS PD – the Paris Dakar version of this bike. It is a dream – 20K miles and purrs like a kitten. I’ve even single tracked it – and it handles well at low speed in the woods. His wife Lisa rides a ’94 K75.

I recently owned four Vintage BMWs. This 1969 R69S was 99%+ mechanically and cosmetically, had an NOS front sport fender, Hella spotlamp mirror and tachometer.

This 1969 R69US was mechanically rebuilt and has perfect original bodywork. It even has a CNC machined billet crankshaft from Mark Hugget that is no longer available.

This 1965 R60/2 was rebuilt mechanically and ran like a top. Both top and bottom ends were been rebuilt with the help of Ed Korn and Randy Long. It is now owned by another collector.

My pride and joy was this 1954 R51/3. You can also see it on pages 8 and 9 of Ian Falloon’s book, Original BMW air-Cooled Boxer Twins 1950 – 1996, ISBN 0-7603-1424-1. It turned a lot of heads on its occasional ride.

I especially enjoy seeing what BMW bikes are for sale. Some of my favorite places to visit are:
