My paternal grandmother, Katie Crank, died December 14, 1957. I have only vague memories of her, as I was just over 3 when she died.
Katie was the child of Nathaniel Crank and Mary Jane Cowsert Crank. She was born October 21, 1893 in Golconda, Pope County, IL. Katie seems to have at least two brothers, Calvin C. and Albert. Nathaniel, Katie’s father, was the son of John Moses Crank and Binda Wallace Crank.
The 1870 Census of Township 11 S, Range 7 E, Pope County (enumerated 23 June 1870) shows Nathaniel Crank, age 3, living in Lusk. His father is listed as Thomas (don’t know where Thomas came from, it was John Moses Crank) age 32. His mother is listed as Bindaey (often spelled Binda in other documents) age 28. Nathaniel’s listed siblings are: Sarah, female, age 10; Juliett, female, age 10; Garrett, male, age 5; (Nathaniel); and Betty, female, age 1. All the above show IL as their birthplace. Also listed in the household is Betsey Crank, age 59, born in Kentucky. (NOTES: Betsey could be Nathaniel’s Grandmother Elizabeth, living with her son following the death of her husband; Betsey is the right age to be Elizabeth, wife of Samuel D. Crank from the 1850 and 1860 censuses; headstone of Samuel B. Crank in Partain/Santy cemetary shows him dying on Jan 15, 1864 aged 55 years, 8 months, 29 days; headstone of Elizabeth Crank in Partain Santy cemetary shows her dying Dec 24, 1876 and born Feb 25, 1811.)
